Spa Circulation Pumps Canada
Hot Tub circulation pumps keep the water flowing through your spa 24/7.
Many spa models rely on the large 2-speed pump to do double duty with jet massage on high speed plus filtration on low speed.
Other spas use a seperate circulation pump which just circulates the water throughout the spa, usually 24 hours a day. This smaller pump moves less water per hour than the low speed on a larger pump, but over a 24 hour period the circulated amount of water can be a similar amount.
Waterway Tiny Mite, Laing, Grundfos, G and G circ pumps and other circulation pumps are found in hot tubs.
A Hot Tub Pump Impeller is the little wheel inside the pump wet end that spins and keeps water flowing throughout the spa plumbing.
Sundance circulation pumps, Saratoga spa circulation pumps, Laing circulation pumps, Grundfos circulation pumps, Waterway circulation pumps and others are referred to in the industry as "circ pumps".
In older spas, the older circ pumps may be too weak for the job but newer model spas have moved to larger dedicated circulation pumps that have somewhat more horsepower.
Another cause for spa circulation pump failure is a leaky seal. Specifications for circ pumps include the operating voltage, HP or horsepower rating, RPM or revolutions per minute, GPM or gallons per minute of water moved through the pump and amperage.

Hot Springs spas uses the E5 circ pump which replaced the Silentflo 5002 circulation pumps. They also used a Silentflo 5000 in the late 1990s until about 2007.
Some troubleshooting tips when circulation pump operation problems are suspected include making sure the cartridge filter is clean before blaming a fault on the circ pump. With filter removed, does the flow problem still exist?
Some circulation pumps start making noise after a few years pointing to a problem with the bearings. Others may leak because of not being winterized properly in a freezing climate, or seals can decay because of poor water chemistry.
A side consideration to be aware of is that there is anecdotal evidence that running a 24 hour circ pump system instead of 2-3 hours of circulation of a 2 speed pump every 12 hours, introduces more ozone into the system since the ozonator is constantly allowed to run during the circulation. In a 2 speed system, the ozonator only runs during the programmed filter cycle. Some technicians report higher check valve failures and even leaks in circ pump system spas pointing to possible excess ozone use. But opinions are mixed when it comes to using either 2 speed or 24 hour circ pump for filtration.
Circulation pumps do not take long for a hot tub technician to replace.
Some circ pumps are interchangable and as a matter of fact, the newer ones are getting better. You ca use a Laing sm-303 or Silent Flow 5000.
Some technicians may also use a rotor repair kit instead of swapping out the entire circulation pump. Usually, if the pump has put in a high number of years it is best to just replace the entire pump to avoid other issues. The rotor repair kits can be pricey and you still have an old pump.
Circulation pumps run the water through the heater and filter. They do provide quiet flow, although not as strong as the low speed of a 2 speed pump. Some plumbing schemes only have the circ pump run over the filter, but not the heater. In that case, the low speed pump is set to be the active pump when heat is called for.
