Hot Tub Pumps Canada
Hot Tub Pumps keep the water flowing through your spa.
If the pump stops working it may be time to replace the entire pump.
Time to replace a hot tub pump? Make sure that the replacement pump conforms to the specifications of the original pump including
pump size, plumbing hookup size (usually 1 1/2 inch or 2 inch), frame size (48 frame or 56 frame), voltage (110V or 220V) and other
factors including 50hz or 60hz depending on what part of the world you live in.
Replacement of any electrical hot tub components should be left to qualified personel to avoid electrical shock or injury.
Before replacing a pump, assure that the power supply to the spa is turned off and also that the power breaker is off.
A Hot Tub Pump Impeller is the little wheel inside the pump wet end that spins and keeps water flowing throughout the spa plumbing.
The impeller is sized in accordance with the pump motor and spa design requirements.
A 3HP impeller should be matched with same size in order to achieve the same performance.
Sometimes someone will want to put in a larger impeller such as a 4HP impeller on a 3HP pump. This may work at your own risk and will improve the apparent water flow at the expense of possibly putting more strain on the motor.
In Canada, find replacement spa pumps online.
In order to prepare for the pump exchange, the spa must either be completely drained, or in the case the spa has valves on either side of the pump such as ball valves or slice valves, then they need to be closed to assure water will not drain out of the full spa while replacing the pump.
Sometimes the valves will not work 100% to stop water from coming out as they can present their own problems (ball valves are usually better than the slice valves).
With most spas the unions connecting the pump to the plumbing can be hand untightened, or you may need large pliers, channel locks or other large wrench to loosen them. Make sure when removing the 2 ends of the plumbing to keep the o-ring inside of the union which keeps water from escaping this connection. If the o-rings are worn, you would want to replace them.
To unmount a spa pump, the mounting screws are removed that hold the pump to the spa base. The electrical connection to
the spa pack needs to be disconnected.
Some plugs fit on the side of the spa pack while other pumps are plugged in directly on the circuit board (such as on newer style Balboa spa packs). The grounding bare copper wire also needs to be disconnected from the spa pack by unscrewing the terminal screw.
Once pump is unbolted from the floor, unplugged from the power pack including the ground wire and unhooked from the 2 water pipe unions, it can freely be lifted out of the spa electronics bay.
Take care of the old power cable to your pump because you may want to use the original power cable again in the case it is not damaged or the cause of any electrical short.
Since different spas have different
pump electrical plugs or hookups, you would either need to specify what type of plug you have when ordering the replacement pump or
use your existing power wire.
To remove the original power cable, loosen the cable clamp screws and find the removable access cover that has the electrical terminal
connections inside. Wire ends should be clean and not frayed.
Be sure to note how the different colored wires are hooked up. Typically in a two speed spa pump in North America you will have 4 wires: green, white, red and black.
Green (or green-yellow striped in Europe) is the ground wire, white is the common wire and usually red is the low speed supply and black is the high speed supply.
When ordering a replacement pump, it is easiest to actually verify the pump specifications by looking at the label on the old pump.
Not all 220 volt spas use 220 volt pumps, and it is imperative that the correct voltage and type is used when replacing a hot tub pump.
If you are just replacing a wet end, note that the impeller is threaded on to the motor shaft. In the back of the motor there is a slot for a flat headed screwdriver. Hold impeller and turn screw in opposite direction (to remove, turn screw driver to the left). To install the impeller turn screw driver to the right while holding it in place. Once you have removed the impeller you can then unbolt the 4 screws holding the wet end in place in order to replace the wet end. Then simply put the new wet end in place and hand thread the impeller on to the shaft and reinstall the four mounting bolts. This is a good time to replace the pump seal as well.
Whether you need just pump motors, pump impellers or pump seals, or need to replace an entire pump, getting a replacement pump is easy once you know the type of pump you have so that you order the same type of replacement pump.
